LIMAVADY

Experience Our Community

The town of Limavady in the west of the Causeway Coast and Glens was founded in the early seventeenth century and its name is of Gaelic origin meaning ‘Leap of the Dog’ (Leim an Mhadaidh).

The ‘Londonderry Air’ is synonymous with the town, as it is here that in 1851 Jane Ross wrote down the tune played by a traveling fiddler – you will know it as “Danny Boy.”

Today it is a thriving market town known for its unique blend of retailers, characterised by family-owned, independent retailers with a fantastic range of boutique style shops, essentials, eateries, coffee shops and bars and a beautiful pedestrian shopping zone just across the road from the market venue.

Within a short distance from the town you will find the Roe Valley Forest Park, a lush, green forest area with beautiful and tranquil scenery.  Binevenagh Mountain provides a bold, dramatic backdrop to Limavady, hence its attraction to as a filming location for the Game of Thrones® series.

You'll find the famous Game of Thrones Door no 5 in Owens Bar in Limavady town.

Just 11 miles from Limavady is Benone Strand – a Blue Flag Beach that stretches for seven miles.

It offers a perfect playground for indulging in some active sports including surfing, stand up paddleboarding,

blokarting and horse-riding.  Also close by is the popular Benone Tourist Compex.

The town hosts excellent events such as the Danny Boy Jazz and Blues Festival, The Limavady Agricultural Show and the Award winning Stendhal Festival.  Limavady is home to a local  Économusée  Broighter Gold, a local farm managed by the Entrepreneurs Leona and Richard Kane.  The Farm produces award winning rapeseed oils, and hosts bookable farm tours throughout the year, as well as a fantastic pop up Christmas Shop once a year.
