In recognition of World Mental Health Day, we are proud to support a cause that resonates deeply within our trading community.
Linda's Original, one of our regular traders from Ballymena, Northern Ireland, is marking a special milestone this month: the 10th anniversary of the bakery's establishment in 2013. Known for its warm presence at local markets, Linda's Original has become a beloved part of the community. To celebrate this achievement, founder Linda is reflecting on her personal journey and launching a fundraiser for Dunclug College, a secondary school that holds a special place in her family's heart.
A Personal Journey
Linda founded the bakery to become her own boss after years of working across England and Northern Ireland. However, as her business grew, her daughter's mental health began to decline. Eventually diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, her daughter faced numerous challenges during her adolescence.
Balancing her role as a full-time carer and a business owner, Linda moved her bakery to a unit behind her home to be closer to her daughter and her school. "Baking brownies, cooking sticky toffee puddings, serving customers, and chatting with other traders became a form of therapy for me," she said.
Giving Back to Dunclug College
Recognising the invaluable support Dunclug College provided her daughter, Linda has decided to give back to the institution. The fundraiser aims to raise enough money to purchase at least five pairs of noise-cancelling headphones for students with sensory issues. Linda will personally donate one pair on behalf of her business.
"When my daughter attended Dunclug, their support was crucial in helping her navigate the challenges of autism and mental health struggles," Linda explained. "I want to help other pupils facing similar issues."
Community Appreciation
Linda expressed deep gratitude to everyone who has supported her over the past decade. "Your support has had such a huge impact on my family and my life, more than you could ever imagine," she said. "During the COVID-19 pandemic, each order gave my daughter and me a reason to go on a delivery, leading to several memorable adventures together."
Her daughter is now attending university in London, and her mental health has significantly improved. "Without your support, she may never have made it," Linda added.
How to Contribute
Linda is inviting the community to support the fundraiser. "Please consider donating; we will be eternally grateful," she said.
